Stevenson’s Island

Raw & Unexplored

One of the remarkable features of lake Wanaka is its islands. All are uninhabited by man and are great places to escape the crowds and enjoy some peace and quiet. Tucked up in the sheltered waters of Stevenson’s arm Stevenson’s Island is flanked by Mt Gold(1304) Mount Burke(1417) and by the broad ridge of Stevenson’s Peninsula.

The surrounding mountains give the island protection from the prevailing westerly winds and make the south-facing beach a great spot for the family to picnic and swim.

A covering of Kanuka trees provides a perfect environment for abundant birdlife. The island abounds with Tomtits, Brown Creepers, and Bellbirds.

A short hike takes you up the 60m gentle climb to a viewpoint over the island. Or for the more energetic take the whole day and hike around the island stopping at some of the many secluded beaches to swim, fish, or just relax.
