Ruby Island is a small island close to the Wanaka township. During the 1920s/30s a ferry carried passengers to the island which boasted tearooms and a dance floor. Dances were held every Saturday night on the covered dance floor. Although the foundations from the old dance floor remain, today the island is a quieter place. Its garden-like setting and close proximity to the town attract kayakers and boaties to stroll around the island, swim off the beach, and BBQ away the summer days.
